Tropical Forestry

Victor Hugo is a Forestry Engineer. He holds a Master’s in Forest Management with an emphasis on forest genetic improvement from the University of the Andes in Venezuela and a PhD in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Costa Rica.

For almost a decade he has specialized in the study of coffee cultivation under agroforestry systems in low-altitude tropical environments, with an emphasis on plant physiology, productivity, nutritional dynamics, ecophysiology, resistance, soil health, and spatial analysis applied to agroecosystems. His work integrates workflows with drones for remote sensing, advanced phenotyping, and precision spraying evaluation.

Victor leads the long-term agroforestry trial with the Coffea arabica var. Esperanza L4A5 hybrid on alluvial soils in the Costa Rican Caribbean, applying methods of multitemporal analysis, spectral indices, geostatistics, growth modeling, and climate integration. He is also responsible for the Geomatics and Remote Sensing Center at EARTH University, where he conducts research on spectral and thermal sensors, IoT monitoring, and precision agriculture.

As a professor, Victor teaches courses in Tropical Forestry and coordinates the Forestry Scenario for the Work Experience and Professional Experience courses. He is a guest lecturer in master’s programs at UASB-Bolivia, CATIE, and in international diploma programs. He supervises undergraduate and graduate theses and promotes tropical research focused on coffee systems.
